Quirky B&B with friendly owners in a quaint little French village just outside of Calais.
We stayed here three nights last week and I loved every minute of it!
This isn't an upmarket designer hotel by any means so please don't book expecting that. This is a small b&b with lots of personality owned by a friendly couple.
It is a small B&B which used to be a working Blacksmith's Forge. The main communal/dining area has a pool table and is decorated with lots of interesting relics from when it used to be a Forge.
The rooms are themed and very quirky. We booked the Love Room which, although wasn't decorated entirely to our taste, was most definitely a lot more interesting than your average plain old hotel room. I loved that it was a bit different and unusual.
There is a small plunge pool outside in the garden with some deck chairs. Unfortunately for us the pool was not working when we arrived but they got it working again as soon as they could and we managed to get in a quick swim on the last night.
The village is quiet and peaceful. There is a couple Taverns and a lovely restaurant 10 minutes walk from the B&B at the nearby campsite. Otherwise there is not a great deal going on but it is a short drive from Calais and St Omer.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and found the owners extremely friendly and welcoming.
The owners spoke very little English and we spoke very little French so communicating with them was a little challenging.
They have quite a number of dogs which are in a separate fenced off area of the garden. We love dogs so this was no problem to us at all.
The stairs to the rooms were very steep and narrow which was fine for us but if you are disabled or just have lots of heavy luggage it may be an issue.
There is no Wifi at this hotel which, again, was not a problem for us as our phone contracts have free roaming.
Breakfast was included and consisted of the freshest bread and pastries, yummy cheeses, decent coffee and a selection of cereal and yogurts.
All in all we had a lovely time and would definitely come back.

Yes its quirky but that's all
We stayed at the Forge at the end of August as we were taking a trip to South of Bordeaux. My partner and I and his parents. I chose the place because it looked to be very quirky. It is exactly that but the rooms are clean and the owner was extremely helpful and friendly. We used to the pool too!! This is not 5 star accommodation but neither are you paying for 5 star accommodation. It is very french and very quaint. The themed rooms are charming and the breakfast was wonderful. We loved it and we will stay there again if chance takes us there. Thank you.

Very Different
We arrived at around 5 pm to be greeted with a note on the door telling us that we would be welcomed between 6 pm and 10 pm, so went off for an early meal. First instinct was to go to the ferry terminal and come straight home. However, as we were with friends, we went back... We managed just to fit our 3 classic cars onto the driveway. The owner speaks very little English, I speak some French, so we muddled through.
First, you need to set your expectations correctly - this is a B&B in the traditional sense in that it is someone's home in which they let out rooms. It is not a hotel of any kind. Our room was the "sea room" - up a very narrow and steep stair case and located in the roof over the forge. A large room with poor quality and rickety flatpack furniture. The floor was covered in lino, which to me always feels dirty. Although the room had plenty of themed features - you almost expected Captain Haddock to come out of the wardrobe, it felt very spartan. However, downstairs, in the Forge area, there is a pool table so we spent the evening playing pool.
Our bed was about 3/4 scale. I'm only 5ft 8 in tall, but could not sleep stretched out as I had my head against the headboard and feet against the footboard. The bed was not comfortable and if someone had told me that the bedding had not been changed, I would probably believe them.
Breakfast, though, was superb. The owner had laid the table with a selection of fresh bread, croissants, pain au chocolate and a selection of jam, fruit and yoghurt. There was plenty of orange juice, tea and coffee.
We noticed also that the dining / reception area houses a huge collection of eclectic artefacts. All in all very strange. I felt uncomfortable and think on balance my first instinct to carry on home and loose the payment would have been the right one. Would I stay there again? No!

An intriguing Place!
A strange place this - and not just because of the things that other reviews mention...I booked in here with my wife and our 15-month old because we could only find an early morning Channel Tunnel crossing after a week in Burgundy. I know Guines fairly well from having stayed at the local Castles and Camping site for years - and it's the perfect town for a quick stop before a channel crossing.
On arrival, I have to agree with other reviewers and say that the outside of the B&B is a little ramshackle. Added to this our room - the Orientale (with it's crazy decorations!) - was a little damp (both in smell, and the feel of the bedding). The curtains were not very thick and let some light in, and the toilet cistern wanted to fill for most of the night (although I fixed this with a quick fiddle when I could be bothered to get out of bed in the morning!).
However, in complete contrast to this (and some previous reviews) the customer service that we received during our stay was exemplary. A travel cot was provided for us for our toddler (in a location of our choosing in our room) along with a real mattress, as opposed to the usual hard base that comes with travel cots.
Also, on hearing that we were looking for an evening meal (and couldn't leave the B&B once our toddler was in bed), the proprietor helped in locating a few different options AND then set us a table up in the guest dining (I'd assume breakfast, usually) room with cutlery, plates, wine glasses and the rest. Very impressive.
It's a shame that the general feel of the place is spoiled by the damp in our room and the slightly scruffy feel to the exterior, as this would have been given 4-5 otherwise on account of the excellent owner.
Overall, I would use this place again, but probably not with family (my wife not so keen to return) - it's ideal for a quick stop-over with mates etc - at 60 Euros the price is definitely right. However, in some respects it was MUCH better than a hotel in terms of allowing a toddler/baby to go to bed and having a large space (with some kitchen facilities, pool table and tv to use) to retreat to with baby monitor instead of having to go to bed along with your child!

Not again!
The accommodation itself does not look very inviting. A lot of rubbish outside, that was already described in a review from another traveller some years ago...!, the pool is green and very dirty. There is proper parking space for only two cars whereas the house apparently can accommodate 12 people. The diningroom/reception is old and cramped with lots of stuff gathering dust.
We slept in room Bateau which looked nice at the photos on the website but in reality it is a worn down room with a bed that needs another mattrass. The bathroom needs repair and was not completely clean. There was a non-connected fridge in the room that had mould stains inside and was not clean either.
The rooms are quite noisy and one can hear the neighbours, which made our dog agitated and it made some scratches on the door. The owner, in the morning still very happy about the dog, got very upset and suddenly did not come across very hospitable anymore. Though the scratches were rather superficial and we offered to repair them, the owner made a big drama about it. By then it was already late, otherwise we would have gone to another bed and breakfast. In the morning the owner seemed to have come around a little but that was too late for us to maintain a good feeling about this accommodation.
